6/29/2023 0 Comments Nikolai grube maya![]() Here, I explore theoretically and empirically the marriages and other kinds of pacts established by the Kanu’l with other ruling social units, evidence coming from hieroglyphic texts, imagery, and the archaeological record, which reflect a stylistic canon typical of the Kanu’l dynasty. ![]() Through these alliances and pacts, Calakmul improved its access to the south and built a hegemonic network against Tikal. The circuit of marital exchange (of wives), established by Calakmul with their neighbors, also implied interaction through trade routes, on which different goods were transported from the southern Maya Lowlands and from the Motagua region. In this system, all the participants benefited from the achievements of the Kanu’l- some more than others-and were integrated into a social, economic, and political network. This kind strategies of social cohesion pursued the creation of a system of stable and durable sociopolitical relationships that supported the development of the Kanu’l hegemony. ![]() Epigraphic, iconographic and archaeological evidence show the development of strategies for sociopolitical reproduction through marital alliances and pacts between the Kanu’l and its allies, especially during the 6th and 7th century. ![]()
