Since this country’s founding, we have not allowed our diversity to be our superpower and the result is that the United States is not more than the sum of its disparate parts. ![]() We must demand changes to the rules in order to disrupt the very notion that those who have more money are worth more in our democracy and our economy. They have some emotional baggage to figure out and then tackle how Jake will feel about Uncle Cooper being a bit more than just an uncle. ![]() Slowly Hope and Cooper start to realize things between them is more then friends. We see the hurt, sadness, and guilt over Ethan’s death. We learn about his past and slowly he reveals what has happened to him since Ethan died. He is guilty for still loving Hope and not being there for her and Jake all the years since Ethan’s death. Hope and Jake had made a great life for themselves when Cooper enters their life. ![]() As you can guess, Ethan doesn’t make it back leaving a devastated and guilty Cooper, a widowed Hope, and a son named Jake. Ethan and Hope get married while Cooper and Ethan leave for the military together. Cooper would never do anything to ruin what his friends have but he loves her from the sideline. Ethan and Hope are the young couple who fall in love while Cooper watches from the sidelines. This is a story about a love triangle of sorts. I picked this one only after reading rave reviews and the claims of being a best seller. ![]() And it wasn’t as if Ove also died when Sonja left him. “One finds a way of living for the sake of someone else’s future. Ove happens to have a big heart filled with grief and after years, he lets people fill in the emptiness and thus the story ends. ![]() He begins to reflect the life that he lived with his wife. But, the core of the book is a heartwarming love story between Ove and his wife. So,this is how the entire novel goes with strange characters appearing and disappearing at inopportune moments. Every time he makes an attempt to end his life, life has other plans for him. ![]() A new neighbor from Iran moves in and wham! there starts the twist in Ove’s otherwise not so happening life. He is determined to end his life and join his wife Sonja. He lives in a pod with staunch principles and rules reluctant to adapt to the new era and the technological inventions. I was trying to think of Chinese books I’ve read in translation, and came up with two: Journey to the West, which I’m still about halfway through, and Shanghai Baby, by Wei Hui (translated by Bruce Humes). ![]() ![]() A lot of it was probably lost on me, both scientifically and culturally.
